Roberto Echandi

Bio

B.A. in Law Studies at Universidad de Costa Rica; LL.M. at University of Michigan Law School; Ann Arbor, MI, M.Phil in Latin American Studies, University of Oxford, England; S.J.D. Doctoral Candidate at University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor, MI.

Since October 2002 Mr. Echandi was appointed by the Government of Costa Rica as Special Attaché for Internacional Trade Issues with USA (Embajador Especial Adjunto para Asuntos Comerciales) for the Ministry of Foreign Trade. He is currently participating in the negotiations for the Central American Free Trade Agreement as chief negotiator in two of the negotiating groups, Services and Investment and Technical Assistance.

Before 2002, he was project coordinator for the OECD’s Caribbean Rim Investment Initiative (CRII). He has been Visiting Professor of Law, Visiting Scholar and Fellow at the Institute for International Economic Law (IIEL) of the Georgetown University Law Center. He has also served as Director-General for International Trade at the Ministry of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, as legal advisor to the Appellate Body Secretariat of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland, and as professor of international trade law at the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Costa Rica.

In addition to his ongoing research on Trade and Investment Negotiations in the FTAA context, his has publications on International Trade Law, in particular issues related to dispute settlement, services and all related issues to regional integration development.
